Board Shadowing… What does it mean?

When the Board of Directors is nominated and voted into office in a LeTip chapter, they learn how to work together to make a cohesive team. When a new board is voted in there may be some of the new board who do not know what takes place within the board to make things run smoothly. “Shadowing” the old board is a great way to ensure a smooth transition and handoff to the new board. New board members should follow the old board members for one month at meetings; learning what the role is from the chapter’s standpoint of view.

Is it of value? YES! Shadowing allows new board members to understand the current processes that are effective on the board. Without knowing how the board works together, many boards are ineffective and all over the place when it comes to running the chapter. As the new board members watch and learn by example you already have a foot up when you take over on May 1st. The chapter members do not even miss a beat, as everything should run smoothly with each board member knowing their duties and how to perform them.

Shadowing should start at the Board Meeting as the month of April begins. Board members should talk throughout the month as they do their activities, not just during regular weekly meetings.

Everyone today can be a critic but with ample time to learn (a full 30 days or 4 meetings) no one can complain. With strong, educated Board members, chapters run better, make more money and can work together for the betterment of all members. Being a board member is a privilege and one that brings attention to you as a member and your business. This will always help others remember you to give you more tips. Make the most out of it. Allow others to see what you do. Encourage others to step up and shadow you for the year as a member of your committee. You are preparing these committee members to step up when you are done running for that position which will help with continuity and strength.

The Board members who have a vote are:
• President
• Vice President
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Membership Chair
• Tip Master
• Immediate Past President (within 1 year of stepping down as President)
