It is January and the time of year we look to vote in new officers or confirm the ones we have. It is a valuable time of the year and one that should mean the world to each of you. It is the time to step up and make a decision… can I help run this chapter? Do I have what it takes? Am I willing to learn how to lead and share my knowledge with others? So many things to think about. We have to stop leaving it as the 20/80 rule where 20% of the membership is holding everything together while the rest of the chapter benefits.
Strength is in numbers and when everyone gets involved, you have a stronger, more vibrant and energized chapter. Our larger chapters rely on many members to handle the business. If you are a smaller chapter you may not even have appointed a board yet. Don’t wait! Step up. What interests you, what talents do you have?
When you are selecting a nominating committee, look at them or volunteer for the position and think about the members you might be proposing or selecting to be nominated. How is their attendance? How do they tip? Do they bring guests to the chapter meetings? Are they a positive influence? This should never be a popularity contest but a contest to have the best of the group lead the others. Again, with strong leadership you have a strong and fruitful chapter.
Just like in elections for our very own government, it is important to be involved and participate. If your chapter is not what you feel it should be… take a stance, get involved and make it the best you can imagine!
