Member Spotlight: Gary Wong

Jun 6, 2022 | Articles, Member Spotlight

To know his success you have to understand his beginning. A 1st generation born in America and 1st one of his family to get a college degree. Growing up his mother told him that he couldn’t just be good in life but had to be better just to be equal because some people in this world look down on Asians. He learned many martial art styles at an early age. Started teaching martial arts at the age of Fourteen and eventually became a Black Belt at the age of Eighteen and now holds several Black belts in several martial art styles and is a master instructor holding a 6th degree in Ji Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do. This is what started to build a foundation of what was to become of him. Dr. Wong has been a Doctor of Chiropractic for 29 years and has a Health and Wellness center in Fremont, California. He has been voted by his community The Best Chiropractor in Fremont for the past 12 years in a row. He is also an Applied Clinical Nutrition, where he helps people with disease conditions through functional nutrition. He continues his love of the martial arts by running a 2nd business Wong’s Ji Do Kwan, a martial art school attached to his wellness center, which he has been running for the past 20 years helping children become the best versions of themselves giving back what he learned. He also has a 3rd business where he is The-Animal-Chiropractor; he has been saving dogs, cats, horses and even chickens! They have spines too and have nearly a 95% success rate on paralyzed animals getting to walk again. How does one man run three businesses? He says it’s easy… “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life”.

During the Pandemic, nearly everyone had to make sacrifices and changes in order to survive. How that impact was seen in his wellness center was that it changed the dynamic of the work environment. People were no longer working in an office and having ergonomic work stations. How Dr. Gary helped people was to give them several suggestions. If working from home on a laptop, don’t sit on the couch or your bed, build a work station if you are planning on working more than 17 minutes at a time. Through suggestion many of his clients were able to ask and receive from their employers better equipment, i.e. better chairs, monitors, sit stand work stations and headsets. For those that couldn’t get that benefit, sitting at the dining table with a decent chair and your laptop, taking a break every 20-30 minutes to stand and stretch and get the blood circulating was a good compromise. Be sure to keep hydrated, everyone should drink plenty of water. 50% of your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 160lbs you should have 80 ounces if you weigh 200 you should have 100 ounces. When you get up to take a break and stretch and hydrate at the same time. Do this for 30 days and your life will change for the better.

When asked how has LeTip made an impact on his business? Dr. Gary replied, “It hasn’t only impacted my business but my life. Meeting every week for nearly 15 years with other entrepreneurs taught me how to be a better business owner. The young entrepreneurs were hungry for business and they encouraged me to be hungry for business and the seasoned entrepreneurs new how to sustain business through the changing seasons. I continue learning about how the world impacts us from all sectors of business and see how everyone adapts to not just survive but thrive. I learned not just what I could do to make my business better but learned what mistakes not to make.”

Dr. Gary embraced LeTip and went all in. He challenged himself to learn every role and be the best that he could. He even became a chapter ambassador so he could visit other chapters and see what they were doing so he could take what was working and see who was doing it better. He eventually became a Regional Director for the West Coast San Francisco/San Jose region to share what He learned and help as many business owners as he could, that was a 4th job. Kim Marie Branch-Pettid the CEO of LeTip still can’t figure out how he did it, as he said (chuckling).

Through the journey of being a LeTip member he found that those members that were rising above all others had 3 things in common. They were consistently showing up to meetings and actively participating, passing lots of tips and inviting guests to grow their circle of influence. So he challenged himself and others to do all three.

Dr. Gary quoted Zig Ziglar – “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” He realized that those that tipped the most usually got the most tips. So it was his quest to be the Top Tipper. So far he has accumulated over 100 Red Monthly Top Tipper badges and 11 Black Yearly Top Tipper badges. This is not to brag but to show how much he is helping other people to get what they want. Taking a true interest in getting to meet others and see how you can help them by tipping them or by bringing in someone that could tip them was his goal and continues every week. So every week he looks for business owners to help his chapter members. He became Recruiter of the Year in 2018 and this year He was awarded a Platinum Badge (50 members in LeTip).

His advice to new members: Embrace LeTip and go all in. Don’t make it “Just a meeting”; let it become a part of your daily routine. Show up and have enthusiasm! These business owners are going to become lifelong friends and referral machine. Another Zig Ziglar quote “If you go out looking for friends, you’re going to find they are very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.” How that applies to LeTip is if you go to meetings and expect everyone to just give you tips, they will be scarce. If you go there to help others and pass tips there will be abundance. Invite lots of guests, some will join and others will not, don’t get discouraged. My best referral source was from a guest hat a member brought that never joined. That one guest has helped my business grow to put over $150,000 in my pocket every year for the past 6 years! You never know who the people are that the business owners know that you need to know!

The last piece of advice is that you need to give it a minimum of 1 year. The first 3 months you begin to develop a relationship, the next 6 months you begin to understand the workings on how to promote yourself and the tips you get may or may not be the best tips as others have to get to know how to tip you best and the next year is when you will begin to see exponential growth. Find someone in your chapter to mentor you and reach out to others in the LeTip network around the country who are in the same profession and see what they are doing to be successful.
