What does LeTip mean to me and why Coaching is so important?

Several people over many years approached me about joining LeTip, and my answer was always the same: “I don’t need more referrals because I have predictable referral systems in place, so no thank you”. It wasn’t until I actually heard the 5 reasons to join that I paid attention, and it was the 4th reason that sealed the deal for me: “LeTip members have a reliable source of business professionals to recommend to clients, family and friends”. When I saw how LeTip could help me serve more clients and help my family and friends, I went ALL in.

The first chapter I was a part of, I gave out 186 tips (85% of them outside tips), but only got 7 in return, which led me to switch chapters, thinking that it was the chapter’s problem, not mine. Boy was I wrong, and my Mentor at the time helped me see that clearly. He reminded me that in order to succeed massively at anything, I need to take the focus off of me and put the focus on how I can help others. Imagine if you picked just one person each week in your chapter, made the time to get to know them and how you can help them, where you and your business will be at the end of 2022? Just imagine that for a moment…You would help 52 people each year make a difference in their lives and the return for you would be priceless, not to mention “Put Dollars in Your Pocket”.

Now hang in there with me and I promise I will land the plane soon and give you one of the best Golden Nuggets I could give you about LeTip.

Imagine you’re 17 years old, homeless on the streets of East Oakland, CA, addicted to drugs, and you’re about to end your life, because you have no hope or example of success to point to, in your short 17 years of life. Well, that’s where I was on July 21, 1987, when my first Mentor Gary Ballard came into my life and gave me the opportunity to take a different path. A few months later, I asked him how I could ever repay him, and his words still drive me today to help as many people as I can. He said “John, keep your nose clean (literally) and make something of your life, and when you’re in a position to help others, do so”.

You see, I had taken my focus off of how I could help the people in my first LeTip chapter and put the focus on what I was not getting out of the chapter. My Mentor Steve at the time (call him a Coach or Consultant or whatever works for you) helped me get refocused on what my gifts, talents, and abilities are, and that is what a great Mentor will do for you. Since that conversation with Gary Ballard at age 17, I’ve had the opportunity to build 7 companies (3 of them into the multi-millions of dollars) because I’ve learned the value of hiring the right Mentor, submitting my ego, and taking action on the advice they have provided. Some of the greatest athletes in history have all had a Mentor, Coach, or Trainer that they’ve worked with and if you want to become the best version of yourself, I would highly recommend finding someone who has been successful at what you’re trying to accomplish.

We’re going into 2022 with all the excitement that comes with a new year. New goals, new visions, and new commitments are all part of this experience, so ask yourself this question: Do you truly want 2022 to be the best year you’ve ever had? If your answer is yes, then I would highly recommend finding someone that can help you accomplish your objectives. LeTip has many great coaches, consultants, and mentors to choose from, but how do you pick the right one for you? Great question, I’m glad you asked and here is my answer: 1. Make sure they have success in what they’re coaching you in and they have successful clients as well; 2. Make sure you can fire them if it doesn’t work out; 3. Check in with yourself and make sure you’re ready for accountability and ready to do the work; 4. You have to resonate with them and feel comfortable with being completely honest about where you’re at and what’s really going on; and finally number 5. Show up and do the work.

I believe everyone should have a One Page Plan to work from whether you own a business or not. A great One Page Plan has the following components: Vision Statement, Mission Statement, Objectives, Strategies, and Action Plans. You can use the One Page Plan for your Business, Career, Family, or Personal life. Knowing what the destination looks like (Vision), How you’re going to get there (Mission), the milestones you need to achieve by a certain date (Objectives), How you’re going to achieve those milestones (Strategies), and the monthly actions you must do (Action Plans) are critical components of any business or life plan. For additional resources about how to do this, go to LeTip Wired and watch the webinar I did in December 2021, email me a request for more information, or connect with one of the many great Coaches or Consultants in LeTip.

One last thing I’ll mention is the importance of having a Legacy Plan for your business. At some point, you will want to exit the business, right? It is way better to plan ahead exactly how you want to exit your business vs. having those decisions made for you. A good solid exit strategy, will & estate plan, or a succession plan are an absolute must to protect all your hard work and make sure those you are leaving behind are taken care of. Or, you may be like me, where you are building your business to sell it and either retire or move on to your next venture. I’ve done it 3 times now and it’s a lot of fun building it to sell it or to have it run without you. Either way, don’t wait for “someday I will get to it” to get this done. In the words of Harvey McKay “Dig your well BEFORE you’re thirsty”

Let me close with one of my favorite quotes “Today is the First day of the rest of Your life, so forget the past, speak positive thoughts into your life, expect great things, and make this coming year the best year you’ve ever had”.
