Blood Cancer United
Non ProfitIn 1995 my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. At that time, I was 15 and she named me her power of attorney and health care proxy. I was too young to fully understand what that meant at that time but quickly learned. Unfortunately, with my family history, I have lost my grandmother, aunts, and uncles and two of my cousins to cancer. So of course I wore the pink ribbons, and during sports season’s had the kids I coached wearing pink socks and or cleats. Fast forward to 2016 when I went in with a checkup and the doctor discovered what he thought was a sist in my chest. It was supposed to be a routine in and out 20-minute procedure. That procedure lasted 4 hours. That would be the first of my 6 surgery’s spanning 2016-2022. During my nine months at Sloan Kettering in 2022, many appointments were a solitary journey, but the day of my surgery changed everything. As I waited, hearing a child nearby crying and screaming, “it hurts, please stop, I want my mommy” it fully hit me how many lives this disease impacts. More importantly, the children that were innocent and how this disease can absolutely destroy their chance at a normal life, just crushed me. My goal is to raise awareness, for children, and as much money as I can to fight for them. Blood Cancer United struck my heartstrings when not only did they announce their Dare to Dream Initiative, but they also partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering for it. I just knew I had to get involved.
