Gary Carruthers - Family Man, Community Minded and a Business Leader. Funny that I was surprised when others described me in those terms but as I look back that is a very accurate description of me. I started in the insurance business in 1978. Yes, I have been “doing” insurance for over 45 years. In 1986, after working for another company, I partnered with another insurance agent and we formed our own business Marlin Insurance Agency. We have grown to an almost $5,000,000 agency. We currently represent over 30 insurance companies, including Travelers, Merchants, Progressive and Liberty Mutual. In 1988, being an involved dad with my sons and seeing how they enjoyed scouts, I became involved with Cub Scout Pack 294 of Farmingville. I served as Cubmaster from 1988 until 2008. During that time, I also chaired many committees for Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts of America. In 2016 I was asked to come back to Pack 294 and have served as the Committee Chairman since then. I have been with this organization holding several different positions but mainly I have been there for these boys. I am proud that over 15 of the boys I had as Cub Scouts have gone on to become Eagle Scouts. I have been an active member of The Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce for 6 years. I currently serve as the Treasurer. Prior to being elected treasurer I was the Chambers first Director assisting the Board. In addition to my official role as Treasurer, I am a mentor to many in the Chamber as I have been a successful businessman for many years. In May of 2008 I helped to start the business network group LeTip of Bohemia with 15 members. I have been on the Board every year and currently serve as the Past-President. I have held the position of President during 2 separate terms in 9 of the Chapter’s 15 years. We have grown to a current membership of 58. We are the 2nd largest LeTip networking group in Suffolk County. I have personally sponsored 41 new members into various chapters and hold a Gold Badge of membership. During the pandemic I led our chapter in virtual and hybrid meetings. We didn’t miss a single meeting. Those meetings have supported our members during an unprecedented economic depression. By keeping LeTip going, members got to share and help each other during this trying time. The members helped me remember why I am involved the way I am. Yes, and even with all of this involvement, I have time to spend with my wonderful family. My mother just turned 92. I am the proud father of four grown children and grandfather of 6 amazing grandchildren.
