Advice from the Pro's - John D'Acunto - November 30, 2008
Get to Know your Guests.
Members... don't just say hello and shake hands with the guests when they enter the room, get to know them.
I have noticed members come over, greet a guest, with a handshake, then walk away. There is more than one reason why members are required say hello to guests when they enter the room.
First, make the guest to feel welcome. Second, strive to get to know them.
When a guest enters the room, walk over and greet them. Ask questions: What type of business are you in? Who invited you? How do you market yourself now? Ask them how you can help them in their business. Have a lengthy conversation. Be truly interested in what they have to say. People want to tell you what they do, be a good listener. Get to know them.
Remember, you may be voting on this candidate's application for membership in a couple of weeks. Wouldn't you want to know a little about them? This will certainly help you when it comes down to voting on their application.
If all the members make this effort, I guarantee you will increase your membership. Also keep this in mind: a good greeter has given a tip form to a guest when they entered the room and that guest may have a Tip for you.
